Week 12: The Clean-Eating Challenge – No sweeteners

I am really pleased with how little processed food we are eating nowadays since we started the “Real Food Challenge” about 4 months ago.

We are eating fruits and vegetables twice a day.

We drink more water or milk although I am still trying to get the Hubs to cut down on coffee and juice.

We eat less processed meat i.e. hamburgers and sausages and even if we do, it’s not the main meal.

We are eating way less fast foods or deep-fried foods. Since the toddler does not fancy dry nuggets but loves french fries, I avoid going to Mc Donald’s, Burger King or KFC as much as possible. I think we eat fast food about 1-2 times a month.

We are still trying to get the kids to try new, whole foods. Of course, it helps if I can cook it in an interesting way.

We don’t eat low-fat foods anymore. Everything is 100% full-fat butter, milk or cheese. I am happy to see the kids love to have butter with their bread and buns.

I managed to find some 100% wholegrain bread made with only wholemeal flour and pumpkin seeds and etc. Delicious with genorous pats of butter! I tried to make some wholemeal man tou but it wasn’t too successful. Will try it again…

The best part is removing / reducing refined sweeteners like white sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, sucanat, splenda, stevia, agave, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, brown rice syrup, and cane juice from all our provisions and also my recipes.

I was surprised to find how many food products especially snacks contained refined sweeteners!

This week, we need to avoid all added sweeteners including, but not limited to: white sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, honey, maple syrup, date sugar, maple sugar, sucanat, splenda, stevia, agave, fruit juice concentrate, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, brown rice syrup, and cane juice.

The few sweets / desserts I have been making are:

a) banana pancakes
b) oatmeal with raisins
c) French toast
d) bread and butter pudding

I have tried to use fruit juice or fruits and minimal sweeteners for each of them and it’s good to see the kids enjoying their desserts without much fuss.

The most successful is the bread and butter pudding, which has only 1 tsp of brown sugar. They ate it up wit no complaints 😀

Will try out organic stevia powder and also keep on hunting for delicious recipes that contain as much natural, whole foods as possible.
