Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion

I was experimenting with various creams and lotions when our toddler’s eczema flared up in the cold and dry conditions in China.

While he had a slight case of eczema back home, it was terrible in winter!

He had break-outs all over his tummy, hands and legs and then later, his face. It was dry, flaky skin and probably itchy too as he’d scratch and scratch it until it bled.

I couldn’t bear seeing him so miserable yet I was quite desperate after trying more than 3 brands!

We weren’t prepared for this and had only brought regular weight moisturizers with us e.g. Sebamed Baby Lotion.

Shopping around the supermarkets here, which carries a mixture of European and American brands, I find that Johnson & Johnson is one of the drugstore brands.

Hubby got this Soothing Relief Moisture Cream by Aveeno from the US (about US$10 per tube) when

From the Aveeno site:
Aveeno® Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream with natural colloidal oatmeal and rich emollients is clinically proven to restore lost moisture for 24 hours and improve scaling, soothe the itching and redness of dry skin.

This exclusive soothing cream is non-greasy and absorbs quickly. It is hypo-allergenic and fragrance free, so it won’t irritate sensitive skin. It’s even gentle enough for newborns and babies with sensitive skin and can be used daily.

For best results, use AVEENO® Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream twice a day in conjunction with AVEENO® Baby Soothing Relief Creamy Wash, to keep your baby’s dry skin moisturized and feeling healthy.

Hubby’s friend in the US recommended this cream as it was quite popular among the kids there.

As described, the Aveeno cream is non-greasy and smooths on easily. It seems to soothe his skin but I don’t think it lasts for 24 hours as claimed.

Comparing its usage in China and Malaysia, I’d say that it works wells in Malaysia but needs re-application to be effective in a drier atmosphere.

THE VERDICT: For its all-natural ingredients, I would recommend this cream on babies or toddlers with slight eczema in Malaysia. In drier air conditions, though, it could be expensive since the 140 g tube was used up quickly (twice a day application) in about a month.

I’ve also bought the Aveeno Active Naturals Moisturizing Bar for Dry Skin 100g (soap-free, fragrance-free):

I used this too with my 3 kids. They also have an “oatmeal” bath that is very soothing when my oldest son had hives.

For more severe cases of eczema, I had much success with Aquaphor ointment (an expensive version of petroleum jelly)

I think the price is about 1/2 here in the US.

  • It’s the best! I’m looking out for friends headed for the US to get this and yes, Aquaphor. Thought I could get them from HK but no luck 🙁
