If you are young and single and Chinese, I bet you are relieved that the Spring Festival (or the Chinese New Year) is over, especially the family reunion
Why?
If you’re like MOST young Chinese folks with doting and greying parents (not to mention the grinning, inciting aunties and uncles AND that smug cousin who’s [...]

Oct 1 was China’s National Day (guo qing jie) and for 2009, China chose to showcase its armed forces in their full glory at Tian’anmen Square, culminating in the unveiling of its “giant nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles.”
The camouflage nuclear missiles, riding on 18 launch vehicles, rumbled past Tian’anmen Square and were reviewed by Chinese leaders [...]

To celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival (called Duanwujie) on May 28, two Malaysian friends invited the rest of the group to pack rice dumplings (zongzi) together.
Initially I didn’t feel like joining as I was tired from running a few errands but the thought of Hubby and Lucas having no rice dumplings changed my mind. I’m [...]

At the wet market one day, I peered curiously at folks perched on tiny, tiny stools around tiny, tiny tables under a huge tree near a Chinese temple.

Thank you, sis!
Anyway, I’m stunned [...]

In loving memory of my late Chinese grandmother, I’m jotting down my childhood memories of Chinese New Year. After marrying into a Chinese family, I discover even more about Chinese culture (of the Foochow dialect) since my mother-in-law does an excellent job of upholding tradition.
THEN
On Chinese New Year Eve, my grandmother and aunties would be REALLY [...]

My dear old Chinese grandmother passed away this morning at around 11.30 am from breathing difficulties. Who were with her? Her youngest daughter, her daughter-in-law and the wretched Indonesian maid. She died in my uncle’s old apartment.
Did she get her wish? Doesn’t seem like it because there is no Chinese altar there and neither [...]

Ok, I really need the experts on Chinese culture and customs to help me out on this one. As my father had recently passed away, I’m wondering if I can celebrate Chinese New Year?
When he died:
…none of our Chinese neighbours would accompany me for a minor surgical procedure because it’s bad “feng shui” for them
…my [...]
