Did you know that different countries have different daily requirements for vegetables?
– In 2005, the Australian government launched “Go for 2+5” (SEVEN), meaning TWO 150g portions of fruit and FIVE 75g portions of vegetables.

The US abandoned the numbers in favour of a “fruit and veggies – more matters” campaign in 2007.

Oyebode said she thought the Australian example was probably the one to follow.
“I think it makes a lot of sense,” she said. “It is aiming for more and the balance is two fruit and five veg. From our study it looks like vegetables are better than fruit.
But I don’t feel very strongly that the guidelines should be changed because the majority of people know they should eat five (vegetables) a day and only 25% manage that.”
We are definitely in the 25% category but we went on a “real food challenge” in 2012 and wow, it opened our eyes and taste buds to a whole new world of FOOD!
Eat colours of the rainbow
We’re always advised to eat our vegetables without knowing why.
Multiple studies have shown that diets heavy on fruits and vegetables can curb or prevent certain life-threatening conditions and diseases, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Plus, there’s research linking diets high in fruits and veggies to healthy weight management and glowing skin and hair 🙂
Now, I learnt about an important element in brightly coloured fruits and vegetables called carotenoids.
Carotenoids are yellow-orange-red pigments that are abundant in plants, flowers, and animals.
Carotenoids help protect plants and animals from the harmful effects of UV rays from the sun light.
In other way, carotenoids are anti-aging stuff! If you want to stay forever young, you’ve got to love your veggies like the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans do ^_^
Carotenoids also function in humans by acting as antioxidants to protect our bodies from oxidation.
Unfortunately, carotenoids are essential nutrients that cannot be produced by the humans.
You need to eat foods that are rich in carotenoids to ensure that you, especially your eyes, are getting the nutrients they need to stay healthy.
