When I joined the “Real Food Challenge“, I thought that I would just end up eating the traditional, healthy diet I was raised on.
Little did I know that I would learn so much about health, nutrition and also all the rubbish disguised as “food” in our supermarkets! O_O
Apart from that, it’s been great loading up on fresh fruits and vegetables and hearing my son pipe up one day:
“I think I don’t like french fries anymore, Mummy”. Woot!!!
When he saw me cutting our usual daily dose of fruits and vegetables, he asked:
“Are you cutting oranges, Mummy? I love oranges…”. Double woot!!!
The only naysayer is our toddler. Sigh, I can’t wait for her to get past her toddler age…
Week 5: Try two new whole foods – Try a minimum of two new whole foods that you’ve never had before.
Since I have been shopping at the wet market and supermarket with TWO kids in tow, I decided to choose whole foods suitable for kids for this week’s challenge:
My kids don’t like berries of any kind unless they are pulverized and mixed in yogurt smoothies. I have been trying for ages to get my kids to eat blueberries and strawberries.
It’s a real pity they don’t like strawberries because we can get them cheap here during the colder months.
Blackberries? My son loved them but the toddler didn’t. 1-0.
b) Raw cow’s milk
I managed to buy some raw cow’s milk and was advised to bring it to a boil before consuming. I just hope that the cow is feeding on nice, green grass and not given any hormones or injections for its health. Oh well, it’s just a first try.
I’ve always spurned the idea of fresh cow’s milk thinking that it would smell but surprisingly, it didn’t! In fact, whole cow’s milk is rich and creamy. Delicious!
Definitely didn’t have the slight chemical taste that pasteurised and homogenized milk has when it’s poured out of the Tetra-Pak.
I loved it so much I gave it to the kids for their nightcap. They drank it all without any fuss although my little Anton Ego mentioned that the milk tasted a bit different. Oh yeah, this guy doesn’t miss a thing…
I am so happy with our healthy eating adventures. Will look out for other whole new foods to try soon…
