Recently, I did an inventory check of my provisions and found that I have MANY packs of pre-mixes, which I’d bought in case I had a craving for curries or chillies. Since I’m still miles away from cooking curries like my Mom can, I have no choice but to rely on curry mixes
One of the packs the Hubs and I chose is the A1 Portuguese Style Steamed Fish Sauce.
We were instantly attracted by the cover photo as it reminded us of the mouth-watering fish curries back home!
Although both the kids do not eat anything spicy, we though, “What the heck, we can just fish out the fish pieces out of the gravy and feed the bits to them…”
Hahaha, we are true Malaysians ok! We love our curries and we feel that our kids are becoming just a bit too Chinese in their tastes…
One day, I remembered to buy some eggplant and set about to cook the “Portuguese style Steamed Fish”.
Err…here’s what the actual sauce looked like:
According to the instructions, I had to arrange the eggplant all around the fish and pour the sauce over it:
I’m no scientist but I had a bad feeling that there’s no way on earth the DARK BROWN SAUCE was going to turn into the rich, golden yellow curry on the cover photo -_-
Never mind, let’s give it a try. Everyone deserves a chance, right?
I popped the “Portuguese style steamed fish sauce” into the steamer and waited. Twenty five minutes later, I opened the pot cover and found this:
Ugh, I had half-cooked eggplant and the awful looking dark, brown sauce. I’m sure my Mum would laugh her head off if she read about this cooking experiment…
Nevertheless, I went ahead to give it a taste. It’s got quite a nice, rich, “sambal” taste, yum!
However, it’s REALLY spicy and it burned my stomach, which meant that I would be running to the loo in a few hours. Yes, I have quite a sensitive tummy
I was slightly annoyed with the half-cooked eggplant and think that I took them out and gave them a quick stir-fry before returning them to the curry.
The verdict?
Hubby agreed that the sauce was yummy but since it’s too spicy for me, he’d end up being the only one to enjoy it. This means we won’t be buying any more A1 Portuguese style steamed fish sauce
If you love HOT and SPICY thick sambal sauce for your steamed fish, go for it…
