I’d received a lunch invitation from the expat community but since I can only handle small meals now, I didn’t join in the Mexican food buffet. Instead, we went there for my birthday lunch
Coyote Restaurant was easy to find as it’s at a cosy corner opposite Yuandang Lake. There was also a map at the main road showing the right way to go. Walking towards it, we found a beautiful Chinese tea house cum gambling parlour…
We were the only lunch guests. The restaurant decor was very Latino (or Latina) with warm reds, yellows and oranges. Brightly-coloured oil paintings of Mexicana-like scenes dotted spaces on the walls…
I was very happy to get into a booth and we quickly ordered since it was already 11.15 am. I went for the soup-of-the-day (Mexican mint meatball soup), beef fajitas and an apple juice while Hubby ordered the English-style fish and chips a Mojito. The waitress recommended the chicken quesadillas for Lucas.
Since the tot threatened to demolish 2 bottles of chilli and salsa sauces on the table, Hubby took him out for a romp in the park.
MEXICAN MINT MEATBALL SOUP
I started on the soup and boy, was it yummy! I’ve GOT to learn how to make soups like this because the meatballs were moist and tasy (even though I don’t really like mint) and the soup was hearty and satisfying.
The soup has a minestrone-like base but it’s thicker with sliced carrots and green beans strips. Even the tot agreed to drink 4-5 tablespoonsfuls of it although he spat out the meatballs…
BEEF FAJITAS and MOJITO
I LOVE fajitas (esp the first ones I had in Hard Rock Cafe KL) and Coyote’s are great too. The beef had just a hint of spiciness but each morsel was tender and juicy.
The tot enjoyed the tortillas although he took some time chewing it – he spent more time dishing out the grated cheese and lettuce on them
The accompanying salsa, shredded lettuce, cilantro and sour cream made the fajitas just perfect for lunch. I don’t like sour cream in general but somehow here, the combination was just nice. No problem eating 3 fajitas! (4 tortillas were given)
Hubby didn’t really enjoy the Mojito though – it’s not his kind of drink. He’s an adventurous guy and since drinks were at 50% off, he decided to try something new…
GOOD OLE ENGLISH-STYLE FISH AND CHIPS
Dear Hubby ordered this because our tot is a fish fan and he gave it a thumbs up. Ya, the fish was good with the tartar sauce (and the tot ate a whole piece minus the sauce) but I found the fries rather greasy and YELLOW.
Strange for fish and chips because they looked as if they’d been fried in turmeric-filled oil. And if it was really English-style fish and chips, where’s the vinegar, luv???
CHICKEN AND CHEESE QUESADILLAS
Heaping a quesadilla quarter with the salsa, I bit into a fluffy yet crispy toasted tortilla packed with cheese and grilled chicken. Heaven!!!
I tried to entice the tot to try it but he didn’t like it after one bite. Sigh, he’s really a RICE guy. Despite several tries, we packed them and I had them for tea.
Service was good as the waitress spoke reasonably good English, was friendly and helpful. We also got our grated cheese and cilantro refilled promptly upon request.
Lunch cost Hubby about RMB183 but we agree that it’s been a really nice lunch. As we’re having visitors this summer, we may take them to Coyote if they’re in the mood for non-Chinese food. And we’ll order some rice for the tot!
